Jennifer Laurent-Smart is an Equity and inclusion specialist, founder of Sakafet London and Caribbean lead for Cultural Fashion and Art
Having worked as an equity and inclusion specialist for over 27 years, my love of the colourful Caribbean madras fabric and a desire raise awareness and promote the unique Caribbean culture and heritage within the UK Caribbean diaspora, led me to create Sakafet London, a heritage clothing brand.
I am passionate about promoting cultural awareness and inclusion through cultural fashion by helping people learn about their heritage through the unique Caribbean Madras fabric. I support youth diversionary projects and facilitate inter-cultural and inter-generational workshops focussing on the traditional clothing of the Caribbean diaspora, its evolution, and the role it plays in connecting diverse global communities. Through talks, workshops, and exhibitions focussing on Caribbean cultural and traditional wear, I encourage people within the UK wider Caribbean diaspora, to understand, connect with and celebrate our rich cultural heritage.
I succeeded in displaying traditional Caribbean clothing in a flagship high street store, introducing Caribbean madras to a new audience.
I participated in London launch of Cultural Style Week through a video project and runway shows. I subsequently become the Caribbean Cultural Lead for Cultural Fashion & Arts which gave me the opportunity to engage with diverse groups of people and introduce traditional Caribbean wear to a wider group of people in the UK and Europe.
In 2022 I was the subject of an educational film ‘The Story Behind My Caribbean Cultural Style’, screened at Cineworld O2 examining the significance of Caribbean cultural clothing to my identity and that of people within the Caribbean diaspora. The film also examined how I use Madras when designing costumes for Notting Hill carnival to enable people in the UK Caribbean diaspora to reconnect with and celebrate their Caribbean heritage.
